MAKING OF: Viterbo Sotterranea

We are arriving at the end of the making of the tracks extracted from Viterbo Underground: after the sonification, Stefano Pontani, playing guitar and loops, is proceeding to arrange the pieces, by following the EMusic’s rules. Finally, Marco Guidolotti, as special guest, provides with his sax a more “artistic” interpretation of the sounds of the Earth, by interacting with them, in a completely free dialogue.

Struggling with the sonification of TEM data…the passage from Geophysics to Music is really short with Antonio Menghini!

As it often happens when you are dealing with Geosciences, we had to reconsider our initial hypothesis. In fact, the geologic model that we had imaged came out different from that we recovered from the TEM sounding: the inversion of the geophysical data, performed by Stefano Floris e Matteo Pelorosso from S.Te.G.A, showed the presence of only two layers, not three. The first one has high resistivity (about 400 ohm-m) and a thickness of 28 m. On the basis of stratigraphic data collected in the surroundings, besides the geological survey that can be carried out by exploiting just the tunnels of Viterbo Sotterranea and the official cartography, it is obvious to interpret this first layer as the “Tufo rosso a scorie nere” (the tephritic-phonolitic Ignimbrite emitted by Vico Volcano, about 150-200.000 years ago). Below we find a definitely more conductive formation (about 10 ohm-m) which cannot be, by considering the electrical features, the “Peperino”, as we expected, but the Pliocenic Clays (deposited on deep ocean floors, between 1 and 2 millions years ago). Hence, in this part of Viterbo, the ignimbritic flows of “Peperino” never arrived (or they could be completely eroded), as indeed it is confirmed by the absence of outcrops in the north-western area of the city. Furthermore, this geologic contact assumes a particular significance also for the hydrogeology, as Tuffs can host a phreatic aquifer that is sustained by the impermeable Clays. Hence, the underground network, where it is more incised, could intercept groundwater.

We are proceeding with the field data acquisition. Today Stefano Floris and Matteo Pelorosso from S.Te.G.A. have performed the geophysical survey. The data will be processed and sonified by Antonio Menghini and Stefano Pontani

To compose the piece “I Suoni della Viterbo Sotterranea” we had firstly to solve a technical issue: due to the presence of infrastructures above the underground path, that would have affected the acquisition of TEM data, from which we’ll compose the musical track, we had to find an alternative site. The Orti del Duomo area, located a few hundred meters far, fit very well with our needs, since we have got available space enough to perform the sounding, with the advantage to get the same stratigraphic succession of Viterbo Sotterranea: Tufo rosso (Tephritic-phonolitic ignimbrite)-Peperino (Quarzolatitic ignimbrite)-Argilla (Clay).

Rimanete sintonizzati!

The Sounds of Viterbo Underground
We have been invited to compose an EMusic track that will describe the geological formations into which the wonderful underground journey develops, starting from Piazza della Morte…the most fascinating issue is that NONE of us has the faintest idea about what the final outcome will be: the Earth will lay down the law and we will have only to interpret her.
Stay tuned!
